SEA OF CORTEZ, BAJA CALIFORNIA 2003

This time, I decided my dive location based on the wish to see some bigger underwaterlife: pelagics, as they are called. (keeping in mind, of course, that you dive in an Ocean, and not in the Zoo, so never any guarantee). I thought that the Sea of Cortez in October would give me a chance to see hammerheads, rays, and who knows, whales.

At arrival in La Paz, Baja California, Mexico, after 1 night stop in Mexico ciudad, someone from the dive operator Club Cantamar picked me up at the airport. In the car I was told already that some weeks before, a hurrican had past by (you could still see the result of this), and due to that, the school of manta-rays, that is almost guaranteed at La Reina, has disappeared.
No worry, there is still plenty to see out there in the ocean.

Every day, we went out for 3 dives a day, to different divesites. Definitely El Bajo and La Reina were my favorites. El Bajo for its hammerhead sharks (deep dive) and La Reina for its huge schools of fish. Eventhough the mantas were gone, there is still a lot of other life around.

During the boat trip, we encountered once a whale, and saw several times dolphins jumping around.

The non-diving days can be filled nicely by checking out the neighbourhood. Hiring a car is handy when you want to see a bit more of Baja California.

You can find here some of my pictures of the diving.
